History of Broomball in Embrun Late 1950's marked the humble beginnings for broomball in Embrun. Games were held on outside rinks, household brooms were used and regular winter boots was the standard footwear. Teams were an extension of different social clubs and no one bothered with keeping statistics and league standings. In the 1960's the Embrun Broomball League was formed. It was made up of four teams with highly talented and competitive players. Later this league was renamed the 417 Broomball League. In the 1970's broomball attracted more and more players. School kids formed a Young Broomball League. As interest grew so did the number of competitive teams. Local business began their tradition of sponsoring teams. By the mid-seven-ties there were eights teams in the 417 league. Both leagues were flourishing as interest in the sport continued to grow. When the Ontario Broomball Association (OBA) was born in 1976 all leagues were invited to join the Association. With a 12,000 strong membership the Provincial Association standardized the game, developed conduct codes for players and coaches and provided the necessary administration for expanding the levels of competition beyond local league play and tournaments. Soon the Provincial Association established regional and provincial championships. Players throughout the province now had a great deal to look forward to, playing for regional, provincial and national honours. In 1986 Embrun's Independent Radiator was the first local team to win a provincial championship. They went to the nationals in Kamloops B.C. and returned with a silver medal. The next year Embrun Plumbing began its reign as a Provincial and National Powerhouse. Over the next 10 years Embrun Plumbing was National Champion 9 times and won the silver in 1990 when they finished second. In 1991 Embrun Plumbing won the World Broomball Championship. In 1996 the now famous and still national champions, Embrun Plumbing, played their last game and retired their fame name. A new team named Embrun Sports carried on the region's winning tradition when they won gold in 1997, 1998 saw them take home silver and in 1999 and 2000 they were again National Champions. One thing is certain, teams from our region have contributed greatly to Embrun being known by many as the Broomball Capital. (from CBF Juvenile Championship 2000 program) |
